UKLFI Charitable Trust held a webinar on Kinocide: The Weaponization of Families with Dr Cochav Elkayam-Levy and chaired by Natasha Hausdorff on Sunday 5 January 2025.

Dr. Cochav Elkayam-Levy, spoke about the report she co-authored, Kinocide: The Weaponization of Families, which addresses the systematic targeting of families during conflicts, exemplified by the 7 October 2023 Hamas attacks in Israel.

By coining the term kinocide, the report sheds light on the deliberate exploitation and destruction of familial bonds to amplify victims’ suffering. It highlights the profound and enduring impact on individuals, communities, and societies and calls for urgent international recognition of kinocide as a distinct international crime against humanity by the international legal system.

Dr. Cochav Elkayam-Levy is the founder and chair of the Civil Commission on October 7th Crimes by Hamas against Women and Children and the Dvora Institute for Gender and Sustainability Studies. She has spearheaded national and global efforts addressing the sexual abuse and gender-based atrocities of October 7th. Her contributions include leading a global campaign to amplify victims’ voices and establishing an archive documenting these war crimes.

An expert in international law and feminist theories, Dr. Elkayam-Levy served as a Sophie Davis Post-Doctoral Research Fellow at Hebrew University’s Leonard Davis Institute’s program on Gender, Conflict Resolution and Peace. Elkayam-Levy teaches at Reichman University and serves as a Senior Fellow at the Hartman Institute in Jerusalem. She was awarded the 2024 Israel Prize in Solidarity and the Medal of Distinction by the Peres Center for Peace and Innovation.

Natasha Hausdorff is a barrister at 6 Pump Court Chambers and a frequent speaker on International Law. She has a law degree from Oxford University, qualified as a solicitor at Skadden, and subsequently gained an LLM from Tel Aviv University, focussing on public international law and the law of armed conflict.

She clerked for Miriam Naor, President of Israel’s Supreme Court, and was a Fellow at Columbia Law School’s National Security Program. Natasha is legal director of UKLFI Charitable Trust.
